2016 Champions of the Cause Winners Announced

Award Recognizes Excellence in Veterinary Technicians and Assistants

Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (BIVI) and EquiManagement magazine are pleased to announce this year’s Champions of the Cause Award winners. Brittany Husser, veterinary technician, from Equine Medical Services in Rainier, Washington, was nominated by Sara Perkins, DVM. Katie Jones, certified veterinary technician (CVT) from Turner Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery in Stillwater, Minnesota, was nominated by Tracy Turner, DVM.

Launched in 2015, the Champion of the Cause Award program was created by BIVI in partnership with EquiManagement and the American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians and Assistants (AAEVT). The annual award spotlights the essential work that equine veterinary technicians and assistants devote to their clinics. The contributions from individuals in these roles are crucial to shaping the future of equine health. BIVI and EquiManagement are excited to recognize both Brittany Husser and Katie Jones for their hard work and dedication to the industry.

About the Winners

Brittany Husser

Brittany has been in her role as a veterinary technician at Equine Medical Services for a year-and-a-half. “I like that we help horses with anything from illness to lameness,” notes Brittany. The mobile clinic treats a range of ailments and illnesses, but the team particularly likes to work on lameness cases.

“Brittany is an amazing young woman with a passion for equines and the industry,” says Dr. Sara Perkins. “She continually surprises us with her with dedication and love for horses. She is not content only relying on her past experiences, but continuously seeks further knowledge and exposure. Brittany continues to facilitate the next generation of horse-obsessed youth by teaching horsemanship and riding lessons. She also donates time to the Way Station, an equine facility that rehabilitates injured horses, provides lay-ups and postoperative care.”

Katie Jones

Katie has been a CVT with Turner Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery since its opening in May 2016. She loves seeing the specialty clinic grow and succeed, and she especially enjoys her time working closely with clients. “I get to know the person behind the horse,” says Katie. “Clients know me as an intricate part of the team.”

Her nominator, Dr. Tracy Turner, asserts, “I cannot say enough about Katie Jones. From the first time I met her, she has been dedicated to furthering her knowledge and feeding her passion for horses. Katie developed an education website and social media sites for practices and co-founded a Minnesota Equine Technician network. Her passion and dedication to seeking and sharing knowledge is why I hired her.”

“We’re pleased to honor Brittany and Katie as Champions of the Cause,” says Steve Grubbs, DVM, Ph.D., DACVIM and BIVI equine technical manager. “Their drive, passion and desire to further their knowledge of equine health deserves to be recognized and rewarded.”

The winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2016 American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians and Assistants (AAEVT) Annual Conference during the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Convention in Orlando, Florida.
