Critical to Profitability
Reproductive efficiency is critical to maintaining profitability in the cattle industry. Conception rates, percent calf crop, calf mortality, length of calving season, are all critical indices in a successful cow/calf operation. Several microorganisms, toxins, and chemicals can result in low conception rates, embryonic deaths, fetal infections, persistently infected calves, abortion, or stillbirths.
The major microorganisms causing reproductive problems include Leptospira canicola, Leptospira grippotyphosa, Leptospira hardjo, Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae, Leptospira pomona, Campylobacter (Vibrio) fetus, and Haemophilus somnus bacteria. Reproductive problems may also occur when cows are exposed to Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) and Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus.
