Boost Immunity on Arrival to Support Gains

A respiratory vaccine on arrival helps boost cattle immunity, so they can perform to their potential.

When choosing a respiratory vaccine for calves, producers should consider the following:

  1. Are all the main viral agents covered? A strong vaccine should protect against bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) Types 1 and 2 and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), at a minimum. Other viral respiratory diseases to consider including in the vaccination program would be bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and parainfluenza 3 (PI3).
  2. Do you have bacterial protection? Respiratory disease can also be caused by bacterial agents, including M. haemolytica (most common), P. multocida and H. somnus.
  3. Are you reducing animal handling and stress with your vaccine? The respiratory vaccine you choose can help reduce cattle handling in two ways. First, products are available with both viral and bacterial protection, which allows you to reduce the number of different vaccines given at any given time. Second, single-dose vaccines are available to limit the number of times cattle are going through the chute.
