Not all respiratory tract infections are the same

Reducing the spread of equine respiratory viruses is key to equine health however, some of these viruses can be difficult to eliminate and some can lead to explosive outbreaks.

“These viruses spread very quickly as they have a very short incubation period,” says Dr. Nicola Pusterla, associate professor of equine internal medicine at the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine. “While high morbidity is common, the severity of symptoms can vary greatly and in some cases the virus can even be latent with the horse showing no visible symptoms but still shedding the virus.

”The varied nature of these diseases means that vaccination is key to keeping respiratory tract infections from limiting your horses’ performance. Look for a vaccine like Vetera® to keep horses going strong.
