The significance of equine respiratory disease

Equine respiratory disease is not only detrimental to the horse but also costly for horse owners.  Between the treatment costs and days lost training, equine respiratory disease can quickly create an economic burden for the horse owner as well as reduce the quality of life for the horse.

There are two major categories of equine respiratory disease:

  • Infectious
    • Equine herpesvirus (types 1 and 4)
    • Equine influenza virus
    • Equine viral arteritis
    • Bacterial e.g. streptococcus; rhodococcus
  • Non-Infectious
    • Allergic
    • Parasitic

When horses are comingled and exposed to pathogens it becomes even more important for horse owners to remain diligent in equine respiratory management.
