2018 PRODUCERS FOR PROGRESS WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The Producers for Progress recognition program, sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, is in its second year, and was created in support of BI’s commitment to putting cattle first, and helping to protect the industry’s future.

GRAND PRIZE: JAMI SCHULTZE

Maple Ridge Dairy, Stratford, WI

“It is important to follow protocols because of the ethical and medical responsibility to use the correct antibiotic for the condition being treated, at the proper dosage and for the appropriate duration. Producers and veterinarians need to be proactive in promoting and demonstrating prudent antibiotic use. If our industry does not continue to improve and show responsible antibiotic usage, we risk having further regulations forced upon us.”

FIRST-PLACE PRIZE: JENNIFER MAY

Fa-Ba Farms, LLC, Canandaigua, NY

“I want to see my cows do the best they can. By educating our staff and working with our local veterinarian to develop good prevention and treatment protocols, I can help eliminate issues down the road. Our goal at Fa-Ba Farms is to be around for several generations and the cows are the determining factor in that plan. We work hard to keep everything clean, dry, limiting of stress, and the cows overall happy and healthy.”

SECOND-PLACE PRIZE: ROD HISSONG

Mercer Vu Farms Inc., Mercersburg, PA

“If you get the point of needing antibiotics on the farm, there’s usually an underlying issue that needs to be taken care of. We culture to make sure we’re using the right antibiotic on the right bug, which gives us the greatest chance for a positive treatment outcome. Antibiotics are a great thing to have in our toolbox, but judicious use means focusing our efforts on prevention.”
